“Tuna lovers, this place is ultra-recommended”
I visited this restaurant last night after one of my colleagues has reserved for us 2 weeks before. The place is not far from Karasuma-Hankyu line. Just 10 min walk from Shijo Karasuma intersection. We were greeted at the entrance, staff showed professionalism expected in a Japanese Izakaya with a... reputation. Then we were served the recommended Tuna course, it included Sashimi, Karage, Salad, grilled Tuna skulls, Aichi-ken style miso-soup and dessert. The jazz music was played in background, food portions were really big and we enjoyed the time there. The price was a bit above average, but I think it was worth it.

“Izakaya with great hospitality!”
The average Japanese izakaya (to me at least) seems generally unwelcoming to foreigners who don't speak Japanese. Especially those in a non-touristy neighbourhood. Some signs: no English menu, menu lacks pictures, service staff appears to give some excuse that they can't serve us without the English... menu/restaurant is packed already for the night when it's obviously not. I'm sure these restaurants serve impeccable food, so it's a pity we were turned away by a couple of such restaurants during our stay in Kyoto. Thankfully, we found Nagomi Ren, an izakaya with minimal (though still helpful) pictures in their menu, and an English accompaniment. Staff were so helpful and friendly despite not being able to converse in English, it really made the meal all the more enjoyable. Menu has a selection of sashimi, grilled fish, cold side dishes, fried food and alcohol. Customers also get individual 'rooms' to eat in and relax. Great if you want privacy or some extra space to unwind after a long day.
