KAKIMARU Ayanokojiten

We stumbled across this little gem of a restaurant/bar in the way back to our hotel. Fab food, an amazing all you can drink for 90mins deal (great quality cocktails, wine, highballs and beer). The staff are young, friendly and attentive. The one chef rattles you a veritable feast on his own, just... don’t be surprised when your order comes in an order you didn’t expect 😀 Don’t be shy of trying the oysters ... they are perfect and reasonably priced.

The place looks very fancy from outside and also the interior is very beautiful. But the quality of food is very then the expectation. There is not a real chef in the kitchen, the staff members are more interested about their hair style then cooking. They served us rotten claims and when we complain...ed they didn't apologize . Very sad place and not gaijin friendly.

I ate a late dinner at this lovely little tavern on Ayanokoji Dori last month. I went in because it was crowded and seemed to be popular with locals. The staff speak minimal English but were very, very helpful, attentive, and welcoming. The food is an eclectic mixture of mostly Italian and Japane...se cuisine, and everything I tasted was simple but very well prepared. The cheesy scallop casserole was great, as was the avocado and anchovy stir fry. The standouts, however, were the excellent oysters, which are served in a number of ways and with a large number of dressing options. I particularly enjoyed the grilled oysters. The wine list is small but includes several very nice bottles, and the cocktails were quite good. The prices are relatively high by American standards, but not unreasonable for the location (pretty close to the center of downtown Kyoto) and the high quality of the food. I only wish I had discovered this tavern before my last night in Kyoto; had I known about it earlier, I would have gone back. The entire experience was very enjoyable.
