“This is the most delicious pork cutlet and tempura I’ve ever had!”

Katsukura , the restraint our local guide introduced to us was absolutely breathtaking… I was left speechless. Katsu was perfection: golden crust on the outside with melt in your mouth tender meat inside. Cooked to absolutely perfection🍤 On top of that, with free refills of rice and miso soup, you c...an eat until you’re complexly full for only around 2000yen!

“It sucked really bad and I was left seething for 2 days. I’m still. A little upset.”

I walked in and felt uncomfortable. This evil Japanese man told me to sit and so I did. They offer in English (I am in Japan) some nasty cutlets for expensive price. I got some eels cutlets. They were so expensive. Tasted like frozen fish sticks. Got some cider yuzu it was mediocre and not fresh. Th...an I wanted sauce but had to apply it myself. They were not good service. I was not even after eating 30$ eel cutlet. I really was not happy. So I went family mart and got a really good fami chiki. My palette was cleansed of this awful experience. I also got a boochi scissors from the local cd shop. That was good.

“It’s so peak…”

To begin, the entrance is very cool and atmospheric. It makes you feel like you’re entering a little part of the city completely hidden away from greater Kyoto. The interior also feels incredibly vibrant, warm and intimate. The staff are very friendly and were always nearby to either refill whateve...r I needed or to help with whatever query I had. When I had the food, I am not exaggerating when I say it nearly brought me to tears of joy with how good it was. I am still thinking about those pork cutlets many days later. I fear I won’t be happy until I return to try again. Genuinely the tastiest food I’ve had in years. If you are around, please visit this restaurant - you will not regret it!

After visiting Nishiki market, we walked along the covered shopping street to this restaurant. The entrance is through a little alley. Fortunately we got a table without queueing. We ordered two sets of tonkatsu. We could asked for a second helping of free shredded cabbages. A satisfying meal t...o rest our tired feet. After the meal, it was a good stroll in the covered shopping centre back to the subway station.

“Disappointing”

I visited the branch in Teramachi (near the junction with Karawamachi - a tiny entrance on the LHS heading away from Karawamachi, next to a large, red "Mr Young Men"sign. It was more than a tad disappointing. The staff are 5 star efficient BUT... 1) while waiting (for a seat that had remained empty ...for almost 10 mins) I - and the small family in front of me were seated on a bench behind counter-eating clients (not a great place to sit and watch - especially messy eaters), which was constantly blasted by very cold air-conditioned air from the basement seating area below - which not only became very uncomfortably cold after the 10 mins wait - it also didn't smell very pleasant. 2) I ordered my (the choice is medium price range: a 1800-3000 yen) lunch set while waiting from a bi-lingual, illustrated menu - so it arrived pretty quickly after I was eventually seated at the counter. I wondered whether the cooked parts had been left waiting under heating lights while I was being refrigerated. 3) I felt the food, including the pork and sauce, miso soup, grated cabbage and rice was distinctly forgettable. Deep fried breaded pork doesn't actually gain flavour by being very tender - and its taste therefore probably depends to a large extent on the complexity of the sauce. Here, the tourist is asked to grind her own sesame seeds to add to the house sauce (or vice versa). Nice gimmick - but not necessarily the best taste. The rice was bland and overcooked (rice cooker?) and the miso soup was extraordinarily ordinary, with slices of hard, tasteless radish (?) and a shred of something else at the bottom for interest - presumably not flavour. The grated cabbage was grated cabbage. I believe street food in Thailand (and indeed Japan) can provide a far more interesting culinary journey without the cost and the freezing wait. Unless you want to follow the tourist hype - Kyoto, I believe, has better (value and taste) to offer elsewhere.
