Good food done on the spot. Very good service with personnel absolutely welcoming. Good location, ample and with lot of seats. Even if the queue is long, the wait is not so as they move fast. Advised to arrive maximum at 8 pm otherwise you may not be admitted even in the queue. Only complaint was t...hat the fried meals were extremely oily

“Delicious pork, worth the wait”

We waited 25-30 minutes in the passageway in a long queue and it was absolutely worth it. The original restaurant of a chain, we ordered their phantom pork tonkatsu which came with rice, pickles, miso soup and shredded cabbage, all of which are included in free refills. The table has a selection of ...sauces for your pork and cabbage and the pork itself is incredible! Melt-in-your-mouth amazing. We ordered one large shrimp to share and they did not undersell, it was huge and delicious. Also recommend the yuzu highball, such a great drink! Will definitely return next time we are in Kyoto.

“So good, we went twice!”

This restaurant was hands-down our favorite restaurant during our 6-day stay in Kyoto. For context, we had a few beautiful Kaiseki meals on our trip that were served in exquisite settings, but Katsukura was friendlier and more welcoming, while still feeling a little elevated, exciting, and fun. The ...fact that they had great kids' meals and offered a surprise treat with each kids' meal (which delighted our 1.5 year old son) left us completely smitten. The secretive "hidden" entrance, the passageway and foot bridge, the welcoming attentive staff and manager, and delicious pork katsu all make this restaurant one of a kind. We were so thrilled, that we visited a second time before we left. For our first meal, my wife ordered a 160g kinkabuta set, I ordered a 160g sangenbuta set, my son had the kids' katsu set, and we had a cod/rape croquette. The kids' katsu set was an enormous amount of food for our kiddo, who is usually a good eater. He made a good dent in it, though, and the fact that it contained multiple food items (rice, fries, katsu, cabbage salad with tomatoes, apple jello, and apple juice) seems to guarantee that even the pickiest kid will find something on it to eat. After tasting a bite of the kinkabuta, I had some regrets about not spending a few yen more to get it as well. The kinkabuta was fattier, but definitely more flavorful than the sangenbuta, which was still excellent and easily the best pork katsu I had ever had up to that point. I was also a big fan of the miso soup they served (I'd never had miso with fish and carrots in it) and the croquette was rich and delicious. Since it was early and the restaurant wasn't packed, the manager came over to personally instruct us on grinding the sesame seeds. He was very nice and continued checking in with us. For our second meal, we went closer to dinner time. We ordered two 120g kinkabuta sets and the kids' curry set. Our son wolfed down the curry, which was great because it had peas, corn, and cubed carrots in it. Honestly, the 120g portion of kinkabuta was more than sufficient to feel satiated without being overly full. The service was just as good and friendly as our first visit even though the restaurant was hopping. If we had stayed in Kyoto a few days more, I can assure you that we would have gone to Katsukura a third time.

“That Yuzu salad dressing!”

OMG go even if it’s just for the Yuzu salad dressing. I am a pork cutlet convert after this one trip. Definitely go early as there will be long queues. Easy for the solo traveller. (Less queuing)!
