“A Luscious Lingering Over Lunch”

Following a morning exploring the Arashiiyama Bamboo Grove, we settled in for a delicious lunch at the nearby Shimogama Saryo, an aesthetic Japanese restaurant located in one of the most historical and scenic regions of Kyoto. This particular region, also known as Shimogamo-shrine, is designated as ...an official UNESCO World Heritage Site. The restaurant itself, which was established in 1856, is set in a charmingly traditional Japanese house surrounded by beautiful gardens. Shimogamo Saryo is also a 1-star Michelin Kaiseki restaurant. Kaiseki is a traditional, multi-course Japanese haute cuisine that focuses upon seasonal ingredients and artistic presentations. This dining experience is a meticulous culinary ritual that includes not only a set number of small, artfully arranged dishes, but also features specific cooking methods for each course. This was – as we discovered first-hand over lunch – an adventure that could easily occupy several hours (and did, in fact). Fortunately, we had asked our very pleasant English-speaking driver/guide to join us in this rather unique gastronomic exploration. Not only did he prove to be a marvelously gregarious dining companion, but he was also able to supply us with some interesting and helpful culinary commentary along the way. The menu changes with the seasons; and the order in which courses are served varies according to the whims of the chef. The menu’s expansiveness, however, remains a constant. While I won’t bore you with a fork-by-fork recitation of each and every presentation, let me simply say that, on the day of our visit, we began with an Appetizer and then moved on to Soup, Sashimi, and Assorted (this was a personal choice from a list of several innovative dishes). From that point, we were treated to Grilled, Simmered, Side Dish, Rice, Desserts, and Sweets. Yes, I know, quite a mouthful… And, I am happy to report, each mouthful was equally enjoyable.

Excellent food and service. It's certainly worth its Michelin star. We were treated like honoured guests all night. The traditional building and clothing of the hostesses were very special.

“A very special meal”

While staying in Kyoto we wanted to mark our last night with a special meal. This was wonderful. I think we may have been the only people in the entire restaurant - but if not, that just shows how attentive the service was, how quiet and private our dining room was, and how well looked after we felt.... The food was delicious. Flavours were delicate and balanced. Drinks delicious. Really happy we came. Local area is lovely for a walk as well. Ladies bathrooms were clean but could have done with a bit of modernisation.

There are so many amazing restaurant options in Kyoto, but so thrilled we were able to enjoy an evening at Shimogamosaryo. I will let the photos tell the story, and just add that it was worth every penny (or rather yen).

“Super expensive, dinner in a rush, very avarage food”

Went to this place that was highly recommended by the Ritz Carlton Kyoto. Well, could not have been a poorer experience. The restaurant was empty, food was really average. Staff was not really nice and spoke very poor English. The only time they were nice was when they brought the bill, 700 euros fo...r 4 people, and we did not order any bottle of wine or sake. Would really NOT RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE.
