“We had a wonderful special dinner”
We had a wonderful dinner time in this lovely restaurant! Not only the food was excellent (exquisite beef steak) but also the host. She cared for us the whole evening. We had an interesting introduction to house history and its visitors e.g. Bill Clinton, Dustin Hofmann etc. We would definitely re...commend this hidden pearl for a special dinner experience.

“Japanese Wagyu Steak house - A hidden GEM in Kyoto”
What a wonderful dining experience this was. This Kyoto home was converted back in 1964 into a awesome steak house serving the most succulent and tender Kobe Wagyu I have ever eaten. A little pricey but well worth the money. Hidden away along a small lane - still owned and run by local 84 year young... lady, great English and funny stories. This place has also been frequented with dignitaries from other countries. President Bush and Clinto to name two, along with various actors. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed

“Serendipity for the win!”
We literally came in out of the rain to a magical evening with Tokiko and fantastic food. She was the consummate hostess, and we were overwhelmed by her good humor, generosity of spirit, and sense of enjoyment of life. A typhoon was bearing down on Kyoto, and our idea of wandering the streets of G...ion for the evening was impossible. Google maps revealed this place as close by, so we went in, and our adventure began! Viewing the gallery was a little intimidating, as we are hardly august company, but she pulled the same pranks on my son she said she had pulled on Bill Clinton. The beef melted in our mouths, and we enjoyed not only every bite, but the surprise performance by a Maiko, who was charming and entertaining as well. We could not have asked for a better evening had we planned it for weeks. I suggest you do.

“Old fashioned hospitality . . .terrific.”
Its charming proprietor, Tokiko Shida, opened the Steak House in 1964 and, with a passion for excellence in customer service, has operated successfully since then. I can understand this. Our evening reminded me of Sunday afternoons at grandma’s 50 years ago. Few choices on the menu or the wine list..., but an endless supply of fresh, amazingly succulent food, quaffable French wine, and lots of laughter. Her glorious Kobe steaks are garnished with flavoursome baked potato and perfectly cooked vegetables., and Tokiko fully engages in convivial conversation with her guests whilst delivering memorable service excellence. Wow!

“Excellent food and a charming hostess”
A friend recommended that I try a steak at Ashiya and I am so glad that I listened. The restaurant is tucked away in a quiet alley, near Yasaka Pagoda, and the place has the feel of what I would imagine old Kyoto was like. The hostess, Tokiko, is charming and fun, and makes the evening go by very f...ast. The food is, however, the star of the visit. The steak was perfect and flavorful, I could not ask for a better dinner experience. Thank you, Tokiko.
