Kaji

Muromachi Kaji is a nice izakaya/kappo restaurant with counter seats (and a private room) in downtown Kyoto. They don't speak much English, but it doesn't matter as they really make you feel welcome despite any language barrier. They specialize in seafood, and I ordered an omakase menu. I got about ...nine dishes, some of them with several items, and to that I drank draught beer and sake. Everything was very tasty, and some dishes were surprisingly creative. It is popular, so reservations should be made at least some days in advance.

This place is an upmarket izakaya with several seats at counter and a separate small room. We sat at counter and I enjoyed watching the staff preparing and cooking. We tried several dishes. Some were very good and some were soso. It's not a place for meat eaters. They offer mainly seafood and vegeta...ble dishes. In a way that makes it an authentic Japanese restaurant. There is a good selection of sake. It costs a bit more than big izakaya restaurants​ but not overpriced for what you get and the effort they put into dishes.
