Sushi Rakumi

We had a reservation for three. One of us fell ill and could not come, so two of us dined. We did not cancel the reservation, expecting that the third course would still be served to us. What actually happened: 1. The third course was never served — only two were. 2. About ten minutes into the din...ner, another guest was seated in our third seat. Given these two circumstances, we naturally assumed that the bill would be for two. Instead, we were charged for three — ¥135,000 (¥45,000 per person). When we asked why, the only explanation we were given was a reference to “restaurant policy.” What exactly that policy says about a situation like ours, we never managed to find out. Worth knowing before you book. For comparison, the next day we arrived as a party of two at another restaurant we had booked in advance — our third guest was still unwell. They told us at once, with a smile, that we would simply have to eat one and a half times as much as usual. That approach made perfect sense to us because it was clear and honest. As for the food, it is good, but for this kind of money we expected more. For the same price in Kyoto, I can wholeheartedly recommend Gion Sushi Tadayasu. That is where we found everything we had hoped for at this level: genuinely delicious food, remarkably beautiful presentation, and a wonderful atmosphere in the company of a true master.

This was an exquisite sushi experience. We found it through michelin guide, no problem with online reservation. The place is small with 8-10 seats, and there were as many staff as customers. The chef and staff have basic english though provide the name kf all fish and dishes in english, though conve...rsation was limited to japanese customers given the language barrier. Didn’t subtract to the experience because the food was the star. Marvellous flavours and combinations, and a massive departure from western-style michelin-starred restaurants.
