“Tourist Restaurant - Look Elsewhere”

The food was "meh" at best. The okonomiyaki was covered with sweet goo sauce. The shrimp were overcooked. The edamame needed salt. The appetizer of plain tofu with fish flakes, ground ginger, and onion was fairly tasteless. It cost $50 for two people; it was one of our most expensive meals but one o...f the worst. The staff are friendly and welcoming. It's cleary a tourist restaurant. There were no locals eating there. I'm very unclear as to why it has a 5-star rating.

“Wonderful food cooked with style in front of us.”

Wonderful teppanyaki restaurant which we were lucky to get into as they are so popular. We booked ahead for following day and arrived after a long day's sightseeing to be greeted warmly by the owner and staff. I am a vegan and we had come here especially for the vegan deluxe okonomiyake, which was... well worth it. This meal comes from Hiroshima, which we had visited a few days before but I had not had the chance to try it as it is usually omelette-based. The version I got was packed with vegetables and mushrooms and was quite delicious. It was cooked in front of me by the chef, who was very friendly and made us feel at home. This was one of those meals which, had it not been so filling, I would have immediately ordered again. Other members of my party had various kinds of fish and seafood and one pizza - which is a variation on the Italian dish but which went down well - all cooked in front of us. As with almost all restaurants in Japan, the meal was extremely good value. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would advise you to book on arrival to ensure you get a table as it is clearly very popular, with good reason.

“Some of the best food we tried in Kyoto”

We liked this place so much we went 2 nights in a row. It’s small and if you don’t reserve in the busy season you’ll be disappointed. There’s 8 seats at the kitchen bar and a larger table on the side. It’s a real show to watch the chef. Everything is cooked in front of you. We really like the o...konomiyaki. We are vegetarians and there’s a good selection. It is not only excellent it has a great atmosphere. It’s also easy to strike a conversation with the other guests. If you’re in Kyoto keep this restaurant in mind. But make a reservation so you’re not disappointed

“Best Meal in Kyoto....and a show watchin the chef”

Not sure what was better...the food or watching the chef (i assume the owner) cook. Its like benihana...but not slice and dice. You sit around the grill while he cooks. (I got exhausted watching him as its fast and furious cooking, talking, being a host ..etc.) The set menu is a deal. Way more... food then you can eat. You get some appetizers, like edamame, but then a starter of your choice.....I got the kimchi with pork, which was a meal in itself. The star of the show of course is the okonomiyaki I am not sure of the differences in okonomiyaki by region, this one promoted as Hiroshima style. It was fabulous. They come with pork and i assume fish sauce, as when my wife ordered the vegetable one, they asked her if fish was ok. Me, i got the full on version with the pork and seafood. This thing is a meal in itself. I watched him pile a huge handful of cabbage, onions on the crepe he made on the grill, then pork or bacon slices, i was not sure, and then some noodles with sauce and more veggies and then my seafood. I wish we had time to go there again You need to make a reservation as there are probably only 10 seats. We had our hotel call 15 min ahead and got in. Another couple showed up while we were there and the chef/owner said they needed a reservation...and the guy asked, can i get one in the next 15 -30 min, and the chef said sure. Real friendly place...and almost everyone was a tourist. Our set menu, with way more food then we could eat, was around $20. BTW the place was a bit hard to find...its in a mall and even then a bit tough to find. I kept looking at google maps and it showed me i was walking by it...and finally realized it was around a corner not right in your face. And the name shows up in many reviews and websites as Hiroshima style okonomiyaki & teppank-yaki kamehameaha
