Fugu Kani Hamo Kizuki

Went for for a fugu and crab dinner with friends and family to celebrate Kyoto part of our Japan holiday. First thing that met us was pungent smell of burned fish skin and crab shell. We were escorted to our private cubicle. None of the staff spoke any English and it was a bit problematic to communi...cate. Communication is not a big issue. However, it led to a couple of dishes being lost. Atmosphere in the restaurant was a bit loud to our liking as all cubicles separated by paper-thin particions. Food was quite nice. We ordered some sashimi, set meal and crab BBQ. BBQ was set and first batch prepared my the restaurant staff, rest was done by us.

We wanted to eat crab, but didn’t know what was best in the area so we googled in English. Learned after to do our searches in Japanese or in the local language (rookie mistake)!! This is an expensive speciality restaurant centered around crab, and the ordering was made to be extra difficult even th...ough it should’ve been straight forward. There was a huge language barrier and the waiter charged us for drinks that we ended up not getting. If it wasn’t for the over charges: the food, attentive service, and preparation would’ve been fine if you really loved crab (7 courses) and didn’t mind crabs with shell on. Another minor annoyance is that the waiter does tableside, but ends up overcooking the crab in the soup. We were fantastically full after, as the last course is a rice-congee with leftover broth. Private seating rooms throughout but super tight. Dinner course was about $70-75 per person with drinks.
