Ilfornello

Whenever I can I "escape" to Il Fornello! I usually stay in Mitaka for work but Il Fornello's overall experience is such that it justifies me taking the Chuo line back and forth from Mitaka whenever I have cravings for italian cuisine!. This is not a chain type restaurant. Everything from the great ...service, the complete Italian wine collection to the excellent antipasti, pasta, secondi and dolci are fantastic and make Il Fornello a great place!. The waiter is a very friendly person that will help you to pick a good italian wine. It is here that I learned about Primitivos and Nero d'Avolas. Their lunch menu is of an incredible quality, the antipasti are a selection of several appetizers, then there is the primi piatti (I had an excellent dish of pasta) and the secondi was a chicken in a tomato and carrot sauce that was incredibly flavorful. Another time I enjoyed a risotto with tartufo that made my day! ;-) The dolci dish on the lunch menu was an assortment of incredible flavors from pistacho ice cream to zuppa inglesa. Yuuuummmyyy!! So if you are a westerner and need a break from japanese food I am sure you will enjoy Il Fornello...a lot!

We went to Trattoria il Fornello after eating nothing but Japanese food for 10 days. It really hit the spot. The food was well prepared and they had a reasonable selection of Italian wines.

After a 9 day tour of Japan, we wanted something different. This restaurant was convenient to our hotel, and was a great choice. We had the insalata, the caprese salad, the saltimbocca and the lasagne. Everything was delicious. The service was warm and attentive, and the waiter very helpful and know...ledgeable. We also had dessert - lovely tiramasu and semi-freddo. This is serious food, prepared with care. Highly, highly recommended.
