On our last day in Japan, we've decided to splurge at the upscale fruit parlor at Sembikiya's historic parlor operating since 1929. It is located in the 2nd floor of the Mitsui Tower. The first floor houses their shop where you can buy the fruits served in the parlor. You need to use the kiosk l...ocated at the entrance to reserve. We went there around 1:00 pm so it was full but only waited about 15 minutes to be seated. The place was opulent and you can definitely feel the ambience that only comes from history and the reputation they buit, not to mention white tablecloth tables. My son-in-law and myself ordered a seasonal Queen Strawberry parfait. My daughter opted for the seasonal Musk melon parfait. Additionally, we ordered a fruit plate for us to share. I have to admit it was be best srawberry parfait I've had to date. It's understandable that these queen strawberries are sold around $7 each downstairs (see attached). They are carefully grown and harvested by hand and placed in individual place to prevent damage from other strawberries. Our sitting was slightly more than $125 which was actually way less than what we expected given the amount of strawberries and musk melon included in our parfait. I will gradly pay again to experience the amazing taste, exceptional service, and the ambience next time I'm in Japan. This is a must experience spot. However, you should be dressed appropriately. For those visiting from the states, this is not your corner ice cream shop (i.e. B/R) that you can walk in your t-shirt and shorts. For those unfamiliar with strawberries in Japan, Japan boasts over 300 to 400 unique varieties of strawberries, with new types introduced annually through specialized cultivation. They're not simply a marketing gimick of labeling. Each are acknowledge by the Japan's agriculural agency for their diverse flavors, sizes, and colors,

To buy three boxes of gift item her is a ritual that you have to go along PR not buy. Mostly its for gift giving and order to be delivered to your best customers and they buy them by the hundreds. They have to go check if available in stock. Then they come to confirm and ask if need boxes or wrappe...d or whatever then they box it wrap it and come back to tell you price and ok they go back to fat the CD through and come back with the gift wrapped boxes in their special shopping bag.... Whew.... But that's the way its done. If you are in a hurry go to Tokyo station branch where things go quicker but the mining aqui one is the one that's been there for over 200 years...

If you are reading this review you have likely been brought here by tales of magical Japanese fruit...it's the greatest in the world, it will redefine fruit...blah blah blah...look, it's solid fruit...is it an experience to spend $30 on a small fruit platter, sure it is...will you never want to eat ...fruit in your home country again? No...Everything was like a 7/10 fruit...the watermelon, for example, was way better than the average one I get at home but nowhere near one of the rare great ones I've also gotten at home...and everything is like that...it's a lovely experience, the service is typically Japanese (i.e good) but it's not a place I'd go again...if the fruit was transcendent, I'd go daily...but it's merely good.

As ‘face’ is so extremely important in most Asian countries a good gift is of importance when you would like to maintain as well as cultivate a good relationship. One of the best ways is to give a nicely wrapped gift basket & the best ones are to be found at Sembikiya (the same store that sells mel...ons at 16.000¥ a piece). Mind you; they do offer more than expensive melons and a gift from this store will be highly appreciated.
