和食とちゃんこ 巴潟～ともえがた～ 両国

Was a nice authentic experience. Been to Japan, but never had chanko... like hotpot, with all types of meat. Kids enjoyed it. Took a reservation.

We were looking for an authentic restaurant in this neighborhood and certainly found it. We were taken care of well and enjoyed a delicious lunch special. The restaurant is several floors and did offer in English menu. The traditional Japanese chanko hot pot is worth trying and given the number of... Japanese dining here, this restaurant must be very popular.

It was our first visit at this restaurant but overall a second at a similar place. We attended the sumo competition on one of their last days in May and booked weeks in advance to make sure we get a spot. During competition days the place is extremely busy and I recommend you call ahead. I had a Jap...anese friend call the place as I wasn’t sure I could make a reservation in English, but when we arrived it turned out that the host spoke perfect English and was extremely accommodating letting us actually dine a bit earlier than our original booking. Shah went out of his way to serve us and to make sure the restaurant exceeded our expectations. The food is amazing with a really wide variety of Chanko Nabe soups with various broth bases. You will find miso based soups that are original to Chango Tomoegata only – and btw, very delicious. When booking during the Sumo competition period (January, May or September) ask if they are planning any special Sumo wrestler appearances or special performances. We were lucky to listen to some great traditional singers while we dined which made the experience truly amazing. Also, if you like Cabernet Sauvignon – yes it is quite surprising for a traditional sumo restaurant, but they do have a good one! - ask for the Kokugikan branded wine – it is quite good and truly worth trying! Will for sure go back!

We wanted to visit the sumo palace, which was closed (boo), and also wanted to have a traditional chankop nabe lunch. Tomoegata was an excellent choice - ordering isn't too complicated, which is good, because we ordered with the traditional pointing at things approach. The meal was plenty for both o...f us, and people around us were also having fun dipping meats and eating everything in sight.

I have chanko nabe on a number of occasions. My wife and I had the 2000 yen lunch special with a number of side dishes making this a kaiseki. A great deal.
