料亭 錦水 ／ホテル椿山荘東京

Went for a business lunch. The setting, though in a hotel, is simply idyllic with it beautiful garden views. We were treated to various types of fish, very notably - Fugu ( blow fish 🐡), blue fin tuna, salmon and grouper. We also had eel, shrimp and lobster. All was simply exquisite and so was the s...ervice. I highly recommend this place for fantastic seafood served in the most traditional Japanese fashion.

I chose this restaurant because it was in the garden at Hotel Chinzanso, which I was not staying in, but could walk to from Ikebukuro. Unfortunately, before I finished my nice lunch, it was downpouring rain so I did not get to experience the gardens as planned. Although I am American and not comple...tely familiar with Japanese food (although more familiar after a 2 week business trip) and customs, I very much enjoyed the whole experience, from removing my shoes, to sitting my low to the ground, to the food itself. My "lunch box" which consisted of multiple courses of tofu, miso soup, pickles, veggies, rice, fish, egg custard, tempura, wagashi and a sweet that I'm not sure what it was. All of the dishes were flavorful with great presentation and explanation in English, which I was thrilled with since not all restaurants have English speakers and I do not speak Japanese. My waiter was prompt in delivering sake, water, tea etc, checking on me frequently but not intrusively. I completely enjoyed this experience and would return should I return to Tokyo!

My wife and paid about $400 dollar for a 10 course tasting menu, and we were both disappointed by the food quality and service level. My wife is Japanese, and lived in Japan for 4 years and traveled Japan extensively. We both were looking forward to a good Kaiseki meal in a nice relaxed atmosphere. ... This restaurant is a collection of private rooms, and you need to pay for the private room ($160 in our case for lunch). We then both chose a 10-course tasting menu (costing about $110 per person without drinks). This restaurant is located is an extremely beautiful garden of the hotel Chinzanso which is definitely worth a visit. Atmosphere The initial impression of the restaurant is very nice. The private room was facing a nice garden, but the room was too cold for comfort. The server was rushing us through our eating experience, and often brought the next course while we still where eating the current course. Not a nice experience. My Japanese is rusty, and my wife (Japanese) handled most of the communication, but we both felt that his service attitude was well below what you would expect at a high-end restaurant. Food I had hundreds of Kaiseki meals over my lifetime, and this was in the bottom 25%. It started out nicely (course 1 and 2), but then went downhill fairly quickly. Overall If you need to impress someone who is not that familiar with Japanese customs or cuisine, then this is your place. If you are looking of a nice high-end Kaiseki meal in a nice atmosphere, keep on looking. You are wasting your money here.
