“A very special meal!”

Will definitely go down as one of my top five meals ever. Every dish was a unique and perfect pairing of ingredients. The wine pairings worked really well and the incredible knowledge of the sommelier accompanied them nicely. The waiters were a friendly bunch and spoke excellent English - their atte...ntiveness and good humour really added to the experience. Great touches for my birthday like a birthday dessert and the chef coming to speak with us. Overall the best date night I've ever had :)

“World's Top class creative Italian”

Cuccina Creativa is the perfect word for this restaurant. Except for two speciality dishes, the items on their fixed course menu changes every month. The amazing thing about this place is that no matter how creative they become, this place only serves pure Italian food, and not any fusion style It...alian. They base their creativity on special experiences the chefs encounterned during their days in Italy. The wine tasting menu is always a killer too. I personally hate restaurants who are just so horrible at matching wine with their food, but this place would never make such mistake.

“Very creative and competent restaurant”

We found this restaurant on a Japanese restaurant review website called “Tabelog” on which Salone 2007 was ranked No.1 in Yokohama. We booked a table for lunch several weeks before we set off to Japan as a lot of reviewers mentioned how difficult it was to book a table there. We were a little late... because we came out of a wrong exit at Motomachi station, the nearest station to the restaurant, though we arrived at the station in good time – the Japanese public transport system is fabulously well run, but quite complicated if you don’t use it regularly. Anyway, the restaurant staff were very accommodating and pleasant. Now, about the food, we chose the 5000 yen tasting menu (extremely good value for money). There were several small dishes all of which were creative, using unusual combinations of ingredients (some were even Fat Duck-esque ), and competently executed. My husband liked the first dish which was mashed potatoes with a hint of truffles rapped in tender beef, their signature dish apparently. I liked everything I ate but nothing stood out. There were two negatives for me: 1. Some of the crockery, particularly large bowls, in which small portions of food were served, was very awkward to eat out of. 2. There was no main dish to make you feel you have eaten anything substantial – instead, spaghetti was served near the end of the course to fill your tummy – which did not feel right somehow. But then, of course, this is an Italian restaurant, so, I must be talking nonsense. Oh, another point. My husband was surprised at the small amount (100cc) of wine when he ordered wine by the glass. All in all, we had a lovely time at this restaurant and we would like to visit there again.

“One of the world's great places to eat”

We have been eating at Salone and its siblings since it was Scilliano in Ginza and ate at Salone 2007 the first night it opened for business in Yokohama. It has always been suberb and the most recent visit, for a friend's 60th birthday, was no exception. The chef, staff and management are terrific. ...The winelist is among the best, certainly for Italian wine, anywhere around Tokyo and the value is exceptional. This is not a "cheap" restaurant -- dinner is 10,500 yen pp -- but the quality, presentations and inventions of Chef Higuchi, as group master, and his staff are little short of perfect. Many, many meals at 3,500 yen or so are far, far more "expensive" in terms of value. Letting the staff know your wine likes and price range, then letting them choose, just as the chefs choose the menu each month, has never been a miss in more than a dozen visits over the years. The dinner is chef's choice, but you can call ahead and specifiy all vegetarian dishes or gluten-free -- they will make the pasta with rice instead of wheat. Very much a southern Italian menu, but with the care and attention to detail, not to mention impeccably sourced ingredients, the entire experience competes with the best Japanese kaiseki meal. Guidebooks rate Salone 2007 among the top in Japan, but tend to downplay it a bit, in my opinion, because reservations are a must, and hard to get for the weekend. But with fewer than 30 seats -- much more of the restaurant is wine cellar than might be the case in many establishments -- this is intimate, comfortable dining at its best. Highly, highly recommended.
