手打そば 菊谷 巣鴨本店

The restaurant was about 10 minutes from the Sugamo train station (Mita and JR lines), with a nice walk through the Sugamo Jizou-dori arcade. I noticed the restaurant had been listed in the Michelin Guide for a number of years. The interior was nice and cozy, like most traditional soba restaurants a...round Japan. We had booked a table/room for up to 4 people for lunch, which started at 11:30am with a max stay of 2 hrs. We needed to select a lunch course during the online reservation. For lunch, there was only the 4,000 yen course, and is limited to 2 groups per day. For dinner, there are 4,500 yen and 5,500 yen courses. The lunch course started with a Sakizuke (appetizer), Sobagaki (buckwheat dumpling), Basashi (horse sashimi), Tempura, and finished off with 2 types of soba. The food was really good, I especially liked the Tempura. The volume was just enough for a small meal but not very filling. This would not be enough if you're a big eater. Overall, we had a very nice meal.

We walked here from our hotel in Otsuka on our first night in Tokyo. Just a few tables, friendly, and good variety of soba. A real quaint neighborhood place.

This has been one of my best dinner experiences in Japan. We were a party of six people and had a course consisting of marinated vegetables and fish followed by tempura and soba, for about 3000 yen/person. If you are looking for a cultural experience, I highly recommend this restaurant. As far as I... could tell, communication in English is a bit limited (no menus in English) but the staff was very friendly and helpful. We had a guest who is sensitive to gluten, which they handled superbly.

This place should have more review! Cold soba with tempura was so good with affordable price and the shop has a nice atmosphere to dine in. There is English menu so it was easy to order.
