“Wonderful dining experience!”

Our meal at Shirosaka was divine. It's a very small place. They have a private room, but the restaurant mostly consists of around 12 chairs around a bar surrounding the chef, so you get to watch him and his assistants prepare the food. Many, many small plates of incredible food. They had a man w...ho came to every diner and explained what was being served. I must say ... a little difficult to find. We took the subway and then used our phones to direct us. Finally got a cab, and the driver had a little trouble as well. It's set back from the street a bit. Highly recommend and I hope to return someday.

The food was absolutely delicious. Each dish was well thought-out and I really enjoyed the charcoal touch on some of the dishes, especially the chashu. The tuna tartare was unforgettable, as it had bluefin, uni, and caviar. The service was extremely friendly and attentive.

“Nasty chef”

Having read all the favourable reviews on TripAdvisor, my husband and I were very shocked and disappointed with what was supposed to be a happy celebration for his birthday. I booked the restaurant a couple of months ago and was excited to enjoy a nice omakase dinner with wine. Instead, what we rece...ived was a scowl from the chef the moment we entered. More was to follow from the chef. We were seated at the counter, where two other couples were. The two couples were unrelated to each other. What was odd for us was that we were presented dishes all at the same time with the other two sets of guests, and the presentation was broadcast to us at one go, as if we were a group that had booked the seatings for the evening and had come in together. My husband and I could not hear what was being said at times and had to inquire. It felt so odd and inappropriate for what is supposed to be a more upscale and sophisticated restaurant, where guests are separately presented the dishes with the explanation in a personal manner. After 3 or so rounds of this, we decided to take the initiative to speak directly to the chef to give our feedback and request, since he was right in front of us. We simply asked to be brought the dishes and spoken to personally by the server, the way it is done in so many other restaurants. It's standard practice. We were stunned by his rough, intimidating demeanor and response. He was stern and clearly incensed by the audacity we had to give this piece of feedback to him. His posture was one of defiance and it was obvious he was not at all happy. We had spoken in soft tones and gently and were completed blindsided by his unexpected response. Far from receiving an apology and an offer to adjust their service style, instead, his response was to the effect of this - What do you expect when you're at a counter seat? Huh?? Not at all typical warm Japanese hospitality one would have expected. What did we do to merit this kind of treatment? We take effort to make a reservation and take the time to spend the evening and pay good money. Yet, we were made to feel so bad and unwelcome. I felt sick to my stomach and totally lost my appetite and was so tempted to rush through the meal and get it over and done with. What a terrible disappointment and shock. If not for the nice and gentlemanly sommelier with some EQ who understood how offensive the chef's behaviour was to us as guests, we would have left a long time ago. The sommelier did his utmost best to make up for what was a very awkward and unpleasant episode. Imagine, having the blank-faced chef right in front of us the whole time and trying to enjoy the food after what he said to us. At the same time, we observed for the two other sets of guests seated in the two extreme corners of the counter seating who were locals, the chef found it easy enough to smile and express some glimmer of warmth to them. I guess it did not help that we were not from here and therefore he had no respect whatsoever for us. We cannot believe how bad tonight made us feel. I still feel so sad and disappointed that what was supposed to be a special night ended up the worst dinner ever we have had in Japan in all our years of visiting and spending time here. it truly was. Thank you sommelier for your efforts, but with a chef who behaves to guests like this, I really cannot recommend this place to anyone or friends.

“One of our favorite meals in Japan”

One of the best meals we had in Tokyo. The venue was very intimate with only ~12 seats. Reservations required. Each course was served at the same time for all guests. The food was delicious – each meal felt well thought out and special. Be aware that the dinner course is substantial and you will lea...ve feeling full (which is great). The staff and especially the host made us feel very welcome. Highly recommend you give it a try.

“Best Omakase in small pretty restaurant.”

I visited this wonderful restaurant with my four teenage children and it was the best meal of our trip. We had a 6 course Omakase dinner with every single dish being explained and executed perfectly. They were all so delicious that it is hard to pick a favourite but the mackerel appetiser, their sig...nature sea urchin dish and the wagyu were especially good. The restaurant is small and intimate. Very pretty little place and the staff attentive and very nice. If you have the chance to go - don’t miss this gem!
