We came for late lunch and there was no line. One of the best sushi that we had in Japan. Order a Chef selection and you will be treated to excellent sushi. there was also a lot of locals.

Though Tripadvisor lists two restaurants with the name of Sushi Dai (one in Toyosu where the relocated fish market is and this one in Tsukiji section four), my review is of a third Sushi Dai located in Tsukiji section 7, near St. Luke's International Hospital. I think this is the best of the three... because of the food, the service, the friendly atmosphere and you usually don't have to wait in line like the other two more famous places. I love sushi but don't see a reason to sit outside on the street for thirty minutes when this place exists. They also take reservations and you can have terrific omakase sushi for $30-$50. We've eaten there a dozen times and are always delighted by what we get.

We made a trip over from Shinjuku to have breakfast at the outer fish market. It was an easy trip on the underground and easy to find. Because there were so many stalls and little sushi bars to try, we asked the helpful tourist information in the market building to recommend a counter sushi bar to... try, as there are so many to choose from and it was a bit overwhelming. We wanted to sit inside at a counter and watch the chef prepare the fish - for me this is one of the joys of eating sushi. They suggested 'Tsukiji Sushisay' which has been there since 1889. They were friendly and welcoming to us and found us seats at the counter. Perhaps it did help that we spoke a little Japanese but I'm sure they would try to help as much as they could. The chefs were passionate about they were doing and were genuinely interested in watching you eat what they had prepared to see if you enjoyed it. They had incredible knife skills (almost couldn't watch one of them peeling and curling a cucumber perfectly in the palm of his hand using a huge knife). Rather than choosing the set selection, we ordered individual nigiri to try some new things. The mackerel was sensational (most delicious I've ever tasted) but every nigiri tasted great and everything was beautifully and carefully prepared, as you would expect at a specialist place like this. It wasn't the cheapest option but we thought the price was a reasonable exchange for the quality and the experience. Not surprisingly, this place was packed mostly with Japanese customers. We mixed this experience with checking out some of the stalls too - so try not to overeat in once place, otherwise you don't get to try other things too. Time it right as things open early in the morning and are already shutting up by 1pm - we were nearly caught out with these timings as expected things to be open until later. Breakfast time/mid morning is best :)

Place looks great, clean and authentic but really pricey. They don’t welcome foreigners and really don’t take the time to explain what you’ve ordered unless your a local. Same strip had few other choices

At “Tsukij sushisay” in Kyoto we had a typical, excellent sushi/sashimi lunch, sitting in front of our chef. He did not speak more than a few words English; anyhow we understood each other’s perfectly. We choose from a wide selection of seafood, among others abalone and we enjoyed seeing how fast ...the chef prepared our dishes, teaching how to eat some of the stranger ones. Not cheap but in accordance with the food (abalone!).
