My dinner on July 23, 2026 was, without question, the finest kaiseki meal I have ever experienced and one of the greatest dining experiences of my l...ife. From the moment we arrived, every detail reflected the philosophy of Japanese hospitality. The service was impeccable without ever feeling formal or intimidating. Every member of the staff anticipated our needs effortlessly, allowing us to simply relax and immerse ourselves in the experience. The setting itself was breathtaking. Dining in a traditional private room overlooking a serene Japanese garden created an atmosphere that encouraged us to slow down and appreciate every moment. It wasn't simply beautiful; it became part of the meal itself. Then came the cuisine. Every course was a work of art, yet nothing existed merely for presentation. Each ingredient had a purpose, each technique was executed flawlessly, and every dish celebrated the season in a way that felt both elegant and deeply respectful of Japanese culinary tradition. The progression of the meal was extraordinary. Rather than feeling like separate courses, it unfolded as a carefully composed story, with each dish naturally leading into the next while introducing new flavors, textures, and techniques. What impressed me most was the remarkable restraint. Nothing was excessive. There were no unnecessary embellishments or attempts to impress through extravagance alone. Instead, every course demonstrated confidence, precision, balance, and an extraordinary respect for the ingredients themselves. I've been fortunate to dine at exceptional restaurants around the world, yet Kikunoi Honten occupies a category entirely its own. This was far more than dinner. It was an education in Kyoto's culinary heritage, an expression of Japanese culture, and an unforgettable example of what happens when craftsmanship, hospitality, artistry, and tradition come together in perfect harmony. The restaurant is set is a lovely location we were sat in a private room. The staff were lovely and accommodating even with the language barrier. We have had the 33K Japanese Yen menu, which included sashimi dishes. The food was unique and interesting but if you’re not a fan of raw food, this is ...not a place for you. The cooked dishes were stunning,we just weren’t fans of the sashimi ( personal opinion ). Worth a visit if you want to experience something “different”

Very Nice and dedicated service. We were in a private room. But extremely disapointing food. Maybe one needs to be an expert to appreciate but far from other 3 stars based on our experience. Low value for money

Terrible experience. Spend your money elsewhere. Some of the dishes were out-right bad, service was lazy - did not introduce the dishes or the story. Good things: nice price for a dom vintage 2015, private room and nice location. Insane that they have 3 stars

If you are looking for Michelin Star experience, dont waste your time here. Had some Michelin experience, this is the worst one. Nothing exciting about the food. But the worst thing is that the dessert (orange with almond custard) is filled with bitter taste. Don’t understand the point of receivin...g three star rating for this restaurant.
