“Prefer traditional”
Coil is a very funky place, targeting the yuppies, I guess. The setting is minimalistic with white tiles floor, white walls and tables & chairs like school desks. There are no menues, but you're handed an IPad from which to order. You are to choose the ingredients from which you will build your sush...i rolls. We had some trouble catching on, but the friendly waiter assisted us, when he was available. The little rice mats are brought out in a timber box, you put your stuff on, roll them, eat them. There is also a counter where you choose and make your own tea. We found the whole concept far fetched, unnecessarily complicated and messy. It was an interesting experiment, but we much prefer a traditional Japanese experience.

“Very disappointing”
This restaurant requires you to make your own sushi which is not at all apparent on its website. There is no ambience. The lighting is stark and bright. It felt like a place students would hang out. Worse of all, after I got back to my hotel, I received an email saying my reservation has been cancel...led and there is a cancellation fee of 1980 yen per person. I told the waiter I had a reservation and gave him my name when we arrived at the restaurant but he probably didn't register it in the system. I asked my hotel receptionist to call the restaurant to tell them not to charge me a cancellation fee as I was there. This took half an hour and I don't have confidence that they will not charge me a cancellation fee. It has been a very bad experience. I wouldn't recommend.

“Style over substance”
More a case of style over substance. Via the tablet computer, we opted for the roll-your-own sushi where they bring you the ingredient for the filling (there are lots to choose from, unless you are vegetarian when it’s a set selection), and four pre-prepared rice mats on seaweed. It’s quite fun bu...t even after watching the video on how to roll them you inevitably put too much in and it comes oozing out of the seam. You have to eat the thing whole too, no cutting it up, so it gets rather messy as it falls apart. The meal was very quick in the end as the ingredients arrive fast, and even with desserts we were done in 45 minutes. On the plus side, with two beers the cost only came to £40 (8,000 yen). Worth a go for the novelty value but don’t bring young kids as they will probably struggle.

“Great experience and food”
Unusual experience but fun and tasty. Order a few dishes and make your own sushi. We enjoyed it so much that we headed to a store to buy the gear to make sushi at home.

“Food as Entertainment Art”
Unexpected dinner experience in Kanazawa. Central location - edgy concept restaurant. Roll your own maki and taste many varieties of tea. Excellent explanation before hand and very reasonable for this type of experience. Make a reservation in advance - the restaurant is quite small.
