Cottonclub Takadanobaba

Wanted to listen to some jazz on a Friday night, and ended up here as it was easy to get to from our Shinjuku hotel. Phoned that afternoon to reserve 2 seats, and ended up in the front row. Turns out Friday night is drop-in night, where the house band plays when necessary for visiting musicians and... vocalists. The musicians were almost all high calibre, and included 2 guys who were on tour with the Glenn Miller band. Really fun evening. Food was secondary for us, but we really enjoyed our dishes, which come from the restaurant upstairs. There was a small cover charge which we were warned about ahead of time. I think it was 500 yen, which was a deal in my books.

We went here early evening to check it out as it said there was jazz in the evening. The waiter told us there was no need to book a table and they said we could just have drinks. So we arrived about 8:45pm...warmly greeted by the owner...and seated in the back. We sat through a few beers and Baileys... and just over two hours later were presented with the bill. 2000¥ Niger than expected! That's £15 on the bill! After questioning this.. and that it was not on any leaflet or mentioned to us, with some assertiveness it was removed. This us quite sad as we were enjoying ourselves.

The only reason this place is always packed is because they're an outstanding space. I think the owners know it, and so don't bother with the food at all. Always mediocre. The service is fine, but I've given up on this place.

Came here with friends last year and only just writing the review because just remembered the lovely food we had. It was great value for money. Lovely pizzas and pasta! Will definitely be going back when I'm back in Japan. Next time I'll remember to take pictures and write my review promptly 😂
