Ichimonji

Very poor service (the waiter forgot to bring us drinks when we finished the tea, and he kept laughing when he brought us dishes), overpriced food, we paid 18,000 yen each for a dinner that worth half the price, compared to other Kaiseki where we have been in Tokyo. The kitchen staff could also be h...eard chatting while having dinner. Extremely disappointing

Still the cuisine has touches of excellence, but where is the chef? Two smiling teens manage nicely the kaiseki course but have little art to entertain with comments on the dishes. No patrons around, no chefs around, eerie feeling.

Food that was served was good, with lots of unique flavors I had never tried. As a westerner, the style of dinner I would highly recommend as it's a unique cultural experience. Unfortunately they both simultaneously require you to choose a selection at the time of reservation and do not offer a ...menu. You choose essentially a price level, 12,000 / 16000 / 20,000 yen and the meal is prix fixed and coursed. I was told that the main course for all 3 was beef and that the expensive one came with Kobe beef. I was severely disappointed to find no beef and told I needed to upgrade the bill another 8,000 yen. This all could have been avoided had they published a menu beforehand. And in restrospect, I would have chosen another kaiseki restaurant. ~$330 USD for two is absurdly expensive for what was delivered, the main protein component of which was two tiny bites of fish. Couple that with what felt like a bait and switch and my night was pretty much ruined. There are other Michelin rated restaurants in the area that seem a lot more transparent about what you will receive.

I went there with friends to celebrate one of theme' retirement. It was awarded two star by Michelin. Excellent food was without saying but presentation was also beautiful. We had a private room which was charged extra but with any special occasions, it was worth it.
