Doughnut Plant’s Popular Kichijoji Store Opens at 10pm— Regularly Sells Out within Hours
Popular doughnut joint Doughnut Plant, which originally hails from New York, has proven to be a big hit in Tokyo, too. However, their Kichijoji store in Tokyo’s west does things a little differently—despite regularly opening at 10pm, it apparently sells out within the first few hours.
A short walk from the Sun Road shopping arcade outside Kichijoji Station’s north exit is Doughnut Plant Kichijoji Shop & Central Kitchen, located smack-dab in the middle of an otherwise unsuspecting residential area. The reason it doesn’t open until 10pm is that while it is in fact a doughnut store, it is also a “Central Kitchen,” meaning it is in charge of making doughnuts for other stores in the area, too. “In order to deliver our freshly baked doughnuts to each store first thing in the morning, we need to get them baked and ready during the night,” they explain. “So that’s what we did, while also selling limited quantities of doughnuts from our own shopfront. Before we knew it, we had customers lining up down the street! It’s gotten to the point where we’re already sold out by midnight or 1am.”
They also offer doughnut varieties such as “Sugar” and “Crème Brûlée” which are exclusive to the Kichijoji store—definitely something to try if you’re staying nearby at one of the hotels in the area.
