A recommended spot in the old part of town! Introducing all 5 "kadouchi" in the city to enjoy rare Japanese sake!
Hello! My name is Yakko, I'm a culinary expert.
Cooking experts love sake. It wouldn't be an overstatement for me to admit that I became interested in becoming a culinary expert to create delicious appetizers to accompany my sake!
In this issue, I wanted to introduce "kadouchi." It's a sake shop combined with a sampling area for you to enjoy the flavors of sake. Here, I will cover the origin of the term "kadouchi" to my recommended spots in the city, all in this article!
What is a "kadouchi?"
Kadouchi is a standing sampling section in the corner of a sake shop, where customers can sample sake to purchase.
Back in time, sake was sold by volumes using a square, wooden sake measuring cup. This unique name "kadouchi" originated in how the lips touch the corner of the sake measuring cup to sample the sake.
And recently, this fashion of drinking sake is considered chic….
The time when sake shop was synonymous with the name Mikawaya is long over!
In this issue, I'm excited to introduce sake shops where sake can be sampled using this chic kadouchi!
Dear readers, check this out!
Suzuki Shuhan
Here is a "kadouchi bar" in Negishi, Taito-Ku, Tokyo. A bar, a current hot spot is located right next to a sake shop! Regional sake served in a wine glass is also a chic presentation! A recommended destination!
And please hear me out. This is a spot where you can try seasonal sake selections, the most luxurious selection of sake priced at 250 yen per glass! Popular sake selections such as "Ishizuchi," "Dassai," and "Kudokijozu" are served at 300 yen per 90cc.
Take a moment to savor the flavor as you say to yourself, "Thank God I was born Japanese!" why not toast with sake with the kind gentleman next door?
Fujita Shoten
This is a sake shop in Kanda, the local hangout for business professionals. Surprisingly, Fujita is a long-established sake shop, founded in 1928!
Fujita Shoten started it's "kadouchi" business during their current, third-generation owner.
At Fujita, their appetizers are delicious! Starting with crackers at 50 yen and pickled plums, their kinpira-style sautéed burdock and other appetizers are 200 yen. Also, the 2 sampler sake selection is priced at 500 yen.
Of course, the classic potato salad is prepared thoroughly as well!
Orihara Shoten
"Orihara Shoten" stands on Ninjo Fukagawa Goriyaku Street, the heart of Japanese sake! Orihara Shoten is a sake shop on the Fukagawafudouson, a truly old town, the true gem of the Edo period!
Orihara Shoten serves various "Japanese sake" from nationwide. Isn't the ring to the term "washu" (Japanese sake) appealing? Renowned sake brands are served at 200 yen per the traditional quantity of 50 ml, from hot to vintage sake. Their service is also courteous, with a card listing the characteristics for each sake brand!
No doubt, we will become more educated as sake connoisseurs, or no, as Japanese sake connoisseurs!
Oshima Sake Shop
Nippori is a town still reminiscent of the charm of the Showa Era. No matter how much I say "I LOVE modern chic shops!" I'm helplessly drawn to the ambiance of the Show Era, especially to kadouchi like the Oshima Sake Shop…
Sit down on the cases of beers and Japanese sake inside the sake shop to enjoy some sake! Those who want to start drinking while it's still bright outside. Why not sit under the sun and drink carelessly like an old man? Perhaps, this is the most extravagant way to drink sake?
Selecting a cup of sake is difficult considering the wide variety of sake selections available!
Murataya Sake Shop
Murataya Sake Shop is a lively kadouchi, where sake fans and tipplers of Tawaramachi gather! A sake shop truly loved by the locals is the real deal! The sake shop is so open-hearted that I briefly thought of moving to the area myself!
First and foremost, appetizers such as grilled spring onions (100 yen~), grilled atka mackerel (300 yen) , and others offered at affordable prices are attractive! This sake shop is truly mindful of the masses! Sake topped-off to the brim is only 200 yen~! A sake and appetizer can be paid for with spare change at this sake shop!
Oh, forget it, let's keep sipping sake without any inhibition!
What do you think, everyone? Are you now feeling grateful that you're born Japanese? Each of the sake shops offer unique Japanese sake, and truly mindful of the common people! There's no doubt that kadouchi will soon become the next trend!
