“The perfect first meal in Kyoto!”

Reviewed 21/May/2026

We arrived in Kyoto from Osaka around noon and couldn’t check into our hotel until 3pm, so we wandered around looking for lunch. Unfortunately, many of the places we originally wanted to try were closed between lunch and dinner hours, but while walking through Gion we came across Wabiya Korekido, Gi...on Hanamikoji Honten — and it ended up being one of our favorite meals in Kyoto. The restaurant was quiet when we arrived (this was January 2026) and I believe they were close to finishing lunch service around 2pm. We were seated at the long counter, which turned out to be the perfect spot because we could watch the staff prepare everything right in front of us. There were two lunch menu options. I ordered the Stone Grilled Oyakodon with Melty 4-Cheese, while my son chose the regular Stone Grilled Oyakodon. About 15 minutes later, the hot stone-grilled bowls arrived and the staff added the finishing touches right at the counter in front of us. They used three eggs in the preparation. Two eggs were cracked directly over the chicken and rice in the sizzling stone bowl, then gently mixed tableside while everything continued cooking from the heat of the bowl. The third egg was added separately — just the yolk placed on top for me to mix in myself. The eggs were incredibly rich, silky, and naturally sweet. I was honestly hesitant about the egg at first, but once mixed into the hot stone bowl it became creamy, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. The cheese version added an extra creamy, savory flavor without overpowering the traditional oyakodon taste. Watching the final preparation while hearing the sizzling stone bowl made the whole experience feel special and very memorable. The staff were warm and attentive, and despite us arriving close to closing time, we never felt rushed. If you’re exploring Gion and looking for a comforting, authentic Kyoto lunch experience, I highly recommend Wabiya Korekido.

Lovely restaurant in Gion. Our hotel made reservations for us for dinner. The speciality is yakitori and they are excellent in terms of preparation and presentation. They have a set menu so 8,800 yen which included several courses and they have a drink pairing that goes along with the meal. ... Wonderful meal and would go back again.
