The UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction will be held in Sendai
The UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction is organized by the United Nations to hold discussions about disaster risk reduction on an international level. All member-states (193 countries) of the UN, various international organizations and NGOs are expected to attend the conference.
Holding this conference in Sendai city, which was devastated by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, is an important opportunity for Japan to offer an international contribution. Japan wants to show to the world the reconstruction effort that has been ongoing in the affected areas. Japan also desires to share with all the countries the experience and knowledge it has earned by fighting disasters.
Unique for being the fishing zone where the two ocean currents Oyashio and Kuroshio meet, the sea at Sendai prefecture offers plenty of fresh seafood, such as oysters and tuna. Sendai also is the home of the top-quality beef brand "Sendai beef". It is also the biggest producer of strawberries in Tohoku, grows the traditional vegetable "Sendai twisted-leek", and as a rice-producing prefecture, brews exceptional sake in its various breweries.
Both the sea and the mountains are nearby Sendai, and there are also many good restaurants. This is the opportunity to experience Japanese cuisine, which is recognized as World Heritage.
