“Top-class traditional Kyoto-style Japanese dinner”

5
Reviewed 12/May/2019

Our group reserved the Tomoyu room, a spacious room with a great view of the river and cherry trees in bloom along the river. The food was prepared in Kyoto style, which means that the seasoning was very light. The purpose of preparing food that way is to emphasize the natural flavors of the ingredi...ents. Some people might describe “very light seasoning” as bland or plain, however that style of food preparation is characteristic of traditional Kyoto cuisine. The set course menu was lovely to look at and delicious to eat. After an appetizer course of various small items served in a lacquer basket, we had sashimi of very fresh fish. Next was a soft-shell turtle hot pot, which is a specialty of this restaurant. Some of our group were put off by the idea of eating turtle, but if you didn’t think about that, it was simply a tasty dish. The meal went on and on, with many seasonal ingredients. We were there in the spring, and the meal included fresh takenoko (bamboo shoots) prepared in various ways, including in a simple boiled vegetable dish and also cooked in with the rice. I’ve uploaded photos of ten dishes that we were served. It’s possible that there were others that I forgot to shoot. Definitely by the end, I was full. This restaurant is not accessible to mobility limited people. Our room was up a flight of stairs; there was no elevator. There was a step up to get into the toilet area, and the toilet area was quite narrow. We were there from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., talking, drinking, and eating. If you don’t mind the high cost, this is a great way to experience traditional Japanese culture. Reservations are essential. You can reserve on-line through the restaurant’s website in Japanese, English, Chinese, or Arabic. You have to use a credit card to make a reservation.

“Pleasant Lunch”

We had a room overlooks the garden for lunch, the hostess was waiting outside the restaurant to greet us. Nice location. Good hospitality. We couldn't finish the rice and they packed it nicely for us to take away. Unfortunately we found the food a bit on the bland side, its a little overpriced, ov...erall, it was a pleasant experience.

“Great Kaiseki experience ”

We had the 10-course menu and enjoyed every single dish. Whilst every dish was a small portion, they do fill you at the end of the evening. We had a private room that is overlooking the river and opens up to a balcony. It is a pity we got to the restaurant late in the evening, else it would be a bea...utiful sight. The owner also visited us and explained the history of the restaurant and some of the dishes, like the turtle soup being a recipe passed down from generations. It is one of the few Michelin star restaurants in Kyoto that allows online booking, a huge plus for tourists.
